New York Klezmer Band 1
This Klezmer clarinetist joins forces with today's stars of klezmer and bluegrass to explore the shared musical spirit of two genres literally worlds apart. Appalachian and southern fiddle tunes meet klezmer melodies from pre-war Russia and Eastern Europe, some newly discovered. The resulting medleys and improvisations are at once raw, funny, melancholic and foot stomping.
New York Klezmer Band workshops
In addition to concerts this New York Klezmer Band teaches instrumental workshops in bluegrass and klezmer as well as presenting the wealth of stories and demonstrations that link these two kinds of music. The bluegrass/klezmer medleys are a big hit with the contradance crowd and also a favorite at weddings.
The music of this New York Klezmer Band was selected for a new piece by the Paul Taylor Dance Company that was premiered at their 50th Anniversary performance at City Center on March 1, 2005.
Finding [this band] a was a little miracle. Their music speaks right to the soul. It stirs up feelings as old as the world. As old as love and family and reverence and laughter and dancing on a wooden floor. They blessed our night. – Mireille and Alan
Jesse and I just wanted to say a huge thank you for making our wedding and ceremony so meaningful. Danny, everyone keeps on raving about you and the other musicians. Your voice during the ceremony with Lisa was wonderful and could not have been more perfect! It very much surpassed my dreams of the youtube video of book of love we spoke about! If you ever need references, please let us know. – Thanks again! Rachael & Jesse

[This band] proved to be the perfect musical accompaniment for our wedding at a beautiful old Connecticut inn. From the traditional soulful processional to the lively and exhilarating hora, these talented musicians created a warm and festive atmosphere and a most memorable way to celebrate with our family and friends. We continue to hear compliments about the music…and even had the pleasure of enjoying our trombone-playing cousin join in on a few songs…We look forward to returning to hear [this band] at their upcoming Klezmer brunches and highly recommend them to anyone planning a joyous occasion; they will enhance your day as they did ours. – Cara and Alex

In short, the band is FABULOUS! My wife and I were married on Sept. 17 at Tavern of the Green. We had 110 guests. Being a musician myself and having spent many years in the music business, the decision of which band to have at our wedding was a very serious one to me. They surpassed all of my expectations. As thoroughly impressed as I was with their CD, I was even more impressed by their spirit, energy and virtuosity live. Our wedding guests STILL talk about the “amazing band.” that played and played and played. I don’t remember doing anything else at my wedding but dancing. I’ve been to many weddings, but ours was surely among the most spirited, and I credit, in large part, [this band] for making it such. congratulations and good luck with the wedding! – alec
