Philadelphia Colombian Band Leader
The driving force behind the Philadelphia Colombian Band is an innovative bandleader, composer, arranger, and pianist. Alongside his wife, who serves as the band’s flutist and co-manager, he has dedicated his life to studying and promoting Colombia’s native music traditions.
Originally a professor of music at Bogotá's Universidad Javeriana, he conducted an extensive "personal investigation" of Colombian music. After advanced jazz arranging studies at the University of North Texas, he went on to arrange and produce music for artists across New York, Dallas, Colombia, and Mexico, as well as for live theater in New York City. He has already recorded three critically acclaimed albums, blending Colombian folk traditions with contemporary jazz.
"A fabulous CD, beautiful, exuberant and complex. It combines different styles of music from the various regions of Colombia---the Andes, the eastern plains, the Caribbean coast and the Pacific coast---with jazz and other influences to create an intoxicating new sound. It is sophisticated but loses nothing of the honesty of emotion, the tenderness or the sheer joy of the folk styles. It is bold, modern and open to the world." – Joyce Corbett, Live Music Report
